BECKEN G8 (BASINS)1991-92

Granite African Black
1 basin filled with water,
1 basin polished
34/120/120 cm each

A granite block, found in its dimensions in the stone factory and marked with G8, was sawn apart in the middle. Two basins of approximately the same size were chiselled out of the two halves of the block by hand, whereby one basin was finally polished and filled with water as a vessel, the other, which was polished by hand, remains empty.

The water level, which curves slightly over the edge of the basin due to cohesion and adhesion, gives the impression of a frozen water surface when viewed from different angles and mirrored surroundings – experiential stillness. The hand-polished basin, on the other hand, seems dynamic due to its not quite flat surface, as if filled with water – being and appearance.
